I'm not in a very good state of mind, what with bad stress in RL...so for those that this topic may offend, I'm terribly sorry...
..but if you're never alone when your daemon is with you...then how can you ever feel lonely? And if your daemon always has you, no matter how many years of darkness it's waited for you to see it, how could it possibly want to talk to anyone but you? You're its love, its other half, you are one. All these daemons so eager to talk to other daemons...why, when they have a loving human partner right there with them? Someone they haven't gotten to talk to in years...and instead they want to chat with everyone else..? I don't understand. Why would your soul ever trump you for chatting away like a giddy kid anywhere..?
My soul hurts.

Our health teacher says that the fourth most important thing humans need to survive is love, after air, food, and shelter. We naturally crave social interaction. I love talking to Darkett, and he loves talking with me. He doesn't really talk to other dæmons, and doesn't expressèdly want to, but I need contact. Even though my dæmon is a wonderful partner, I need something new, that isn't myself. I suppose it's the same way with the more extroverted dæmons.

To feel lonely when you have your daemon is to think that there's just the two of you alone forever which can be kind of depressing to think that there's no one else who cares about you enough to be in your company. And daemons and humans are two different....species for lack of a better term. Humans understand humans and daemons understand daemons and its as though you would never talk to another human in your life, just because you've found your daemon. Its not fair on your daemon to expect that from him, sometimes they need a little social interaction themselves and daemons sometimes discuss how to help their humans in certain problems. It doesn't offend anyone (I think) to think these things, thats what the forum is here for!

But something that's expressed in the books heavily is that people who have their daemons are never lonely. Why...WHY would your soul ever want to interact with anyone but you? They're your soul, so what do they care for any other? If your daemon is lonely or longing for social interaction, doesn't that mean that -you- are failing your daemon in that respect? I'm not saying that one person who speaks with their daemon is or should be completely self-sufficient, but why would your soul, your loving one, who loves you absolutely, want to talk to other souls? A daemon loves you absolutely. They're not human, but they are you. What more would they need?
Daemons AREN'T human; humans need the companionship of other humans sometimes, but daemons are supposed to be your conscience. You never saw Pantalaimon asking for tips on how to advise Lyra. A daemon knows how best to comfort his human, always, because they are a perfect balance. They don't have human needs like hunger or thirst, they need only the love and companionship of their human. I think the only time I've seen a daemon not as interested in his human as the outside world was the witch's goose daemon and Pan when he and Will's daemon ran off, which I found cruel and hateful on Pan's part. Very, VERY cruel. Yes, I know that HDM is fiction, but I'm a by-the-book sort. =/

food. = emotional substance. = things you love/things that make you happy. so, according to that equation I just made up , you could say daemons dont need to talk to other daemons because they have -you- who they love and who makes them happy. OR you could say talking to other daemons is one of those things that makes some daemons happy. whatever floats your boat I guess. Its all subjective.
EDIT: Larr, where are you going with this?
Is this a jab at the Daemon Only forum?

Hmm I was thinking that too rabbitboy. Cal could quite easily survive if he didn't speak to other daemons. He'd be totally fine with it but its still nice for him to be able to converse with other daemons. And about the Pan asking for advice - sometimes daemons can feel helpless when we feel really low. Sure, they help a lot but still, its nice for them to able to say 'oh well when my human went through that I did this' and so on. Don't make such an issue of it Larr!

No, I agree with Larr. I hate the daemons only section, but I don't think thats going to change anything . Too many people here like it Larr. It'll always be here. Im ok with that, its no big deal. Let their daemons talk to other daemons if they want. It doesnt affect you.

I think that daemons in Lyras's world talk to other daemons because they can get information from doing so.
Here. Let me try to explain. We are ment to help our humans as well as to love them. Talking to other daemons isn't necessarily something that we like to do, but it helps our humans somehow. Yes, you didn't see Pan asking other daemons how to comfort Lyra, but then he's seen other daemons comforting their humans before, and does what they do if his own method doesn't work. Here, daemons can't do that, so we talk about stuff instead of showing it. When a daemon talks to another daemon on the computer or something, they know it makes thier human happy. If the human didn't like it, they wouldn't do it. We live to make our humans happy, so we do what we can. Since we dont' live in Lyra's world, we have to change things to fit.
Couldn't have said it better myself.

Woah, was the girl alright? I can't help to think the dramatically falling down bit funny though...
Larr, why do you think that your jabbing yourself? I don't quite understand where your going with this? Are you saying that if your dæmon wants social interaction than you as a dæmian are failing it? I hardly agree with that because as much as we wish it to be true dæmons arn't physical so they can never be the same as the dæmons in HDM because they are in a non-dæmon environment. How is a dæmon supposed to know everything? How are they supposed to know that if a human is sad there are ways of comforting them? They don't and that's because they can't see other dæmons doing dæmon things. It's like a child learns off seeing their parent doing things, they learn to speak from listening to people speaking. Everyone works that way, even dæmons, so if they can't learn from seeing, how do they learn? They need social interaction to discuss and learn.
*just realised she is reinforcing Hannah's post* Oh well, maybe it will help people understand better.

Well, feeling lonely is something that pretty much everyone goes through. (I know I have, even with Panaka - Zoe described exactly how I've felt in some of our lower moments; that it is just the two us alone. I mean, we're with each other, but... you know what I mean?) It's only human to feel emotions like that now and again - and our dæmons are basically what makes us human, our souls, right? So... oh, I don't know. I'm sorry, I'm not making any sense whatsoever tonight.
Panaka doesn't talk on the Dæmons Only board very much, but when he does it isn't as though he's pining for the company of other dæmons. He does it because it can be fun, and plus I think it's kind of to do with the fact that we're a bit of a minority. There aren't any other places that Pan or I can talk about dæmons, what they are, what they mean...
Sorry to burst in on this topic like that. I hope I'm not too incoherent.

I encourage Capt to talk to other daemons. But we have our own time together, and his socializing doesn't weaken or lessen our relationship. Sometimes, if he's becoming more of another human than a daemon, wei agree to spend more time with each other.
Also, I want to see what other daemons are like. I waited 8 or 9 years for J. (Not even that, because I've always felt alive and there, being her conscience, or in the age of imaginary friends, because she does a lot of thinking. So I always ways there and I felt it, and she felt me, too.) I waited 4 for other daemons. I never thought I'd find another daemon. And now that I'm meeting others, I want to talk with them.
