I think it's more about old school animals/daemons. I think they're related ideas, based on the description offered, but it's hard to say. I think it means the same general daemon/animal companion or animal representation of the human soul, but not strictly as from Pullman's books. Or maybe it does mentions those in there, I'm not sure. I only just found that and thought it sounded nifty. ^^;

From Amazon's mouth, all text (c) Amazon and whatnot: Editorial Reviews From the Back Cover Exploring the cultural perception of animals in early Chinese thought, this careful reading of Warring States and Han dynasty writings analyzes how views of animals were linked to human self perception and investigates the role of the animal world in the conception of ideals and of sagehood and socio-political authority. Roel Sterckx shows how perceptions of the animal world influenced early Chinese views of man's place among the living species and in the world at large. He argues that the classic Chinese perception of the world did not insist on clear categorical or ontological boundaries between animals, humans, and other creatures such as ghosts and spirits. Instead the animal realm was positioned as part of an organic whole and the mutual relationships among the living species-both as natural and cultural creatures-were characterized as contingent, continuous, and interdependent. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. About the Author Roel Sterckx is Assistant Professor of East Asian Studies at the University of Arizona and a former Junior Research Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. Book Description Explores early Chinese beliefs regarding the animal world and how these informed ideals of sagehood and political authority. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. I may have to go see if our BarnesAndNoble has it and sit down and read a while with coffee!

My local Borders has odd beverages... chocolate flavoured soda?! When I got one of those, I kept asking for more chocolate flavoured syrup, mmm syrupy. I might be going there sometime soon. I'll see what they have there. Hopefully they have something similar to this. Hmmm...

I actually saw that and thought about buying it, but the descriptions wasn't so clear on what is was about so I passed...however if one of you buys it and you like it, I just might change my mind. Unfortunatly I can't go to a bookstore and check it out for myself cuz the English sections here are so tiny, and all they have is mags and book that have become movies...*sigh* Imagine a bookstore that is aaaaalll English books...Rows and rows of english books...
It's amazing I survive in this country...

I think Okibi should write the definitive book on daemons (with our input of course).
