*than one of the opposite sex (darn Option limits)
I don't really have the time to be eloquent today. =P See, I stumbled across some interesting facts while doing my study guide for AP Psychology (need to get back to that), and decided to make a thread asking, 'What do you believe causes same-sex dæmons?' My immediate guess was it meant the person was most attracted to the same gender, and while I was hesitant for a time, this belief has been strengthened in me. Yes, I've heard of exceptions, but these kids were often still in middle school, and it's been reported that some don't come to realize their homosexuality until the age of eighteen. I have a friend whose dæmon is female like her, and though she was in denial for a time, not long after she admitted to having a crush on her best friend - also a girl. For a long time I thought she was a male, but now I'm sure she's female. I was just freaked out by what that told me for a while. ^^; Also, any person I know who's over 15 and said their dæmon would be the same gender admitted to being bi or gay.
Homosexuality isn't as common as most think, either. It's not 20%, or even 10% of the population. More like 2 or 3%. And there's been proof that homosexuality can be determined from a biological standpoint, and even that gay people may have brains more similar to those of the opposite sex. Makes sense that if someone had a brain which functioned more like the opposite sex's from birth, that their dæmon would end up being the same sex, as if tricked by their neuroanatomy. It is, in some ways, like being one gender but with the body of another. One's dæmon isn't affected by physical characteristics, but the cognitive processes do have a great effect, and that's all about what goes on in the brain. Anyway, here are some facts from my textbook:
-In some brain areas, homosexual men are more likely to have female-typical neuroanatomy than are heterosexual men.
-It's been reported that men with older brothers are somewhat more likely to be gay. A possible reason for the "fraternal birth order effect" is a defensive maternal immune response to foreign substances produced by male fetuses. The antibodies may become stronger after each pregnancy with a male fetus, and prevent the fetus' brain from developing in a male-typical pattern.
-'With humans, a critical period for the brain's neural-hormonal control system may exist between the middle of the second and fifth months after conception. Exposure to the hormone levels typically experienced by female fetuses during this time appears to predispose the person (whether female or male) to be attracted to males in later life. Some tests reveal that homosexual men have spatial abilities more like those typical of heterosexual women--a pattern consistent with the hypothesis that homosexuals were exposed to atypical prenatal hormones.'
-In some studies, gay men have had fingerprint patterns rather like those of straight women. Since fingerprint ridges are complete by the sixteenth fetal week, researchers suspect that the difference was due to prenatal hormones. Homosexual women may also have more male-typical anatomy. For example, the hearing system of lesbians develop in a way intermediate between those of straight females and males, which again backs up the prenatal hormone influence theory. This phenomenon (of homosexuals being intermediate between both sexes) crosses many traits. The consistency of the genetic, prenatal, and brain findings has most psychiatrists now believing homosexuality can be explained through biology.
Also, on one section of my site (http://daemons.envy.nu/forum.html #7), I talk about how it also makes sense that the dæmon would the gender you're most attracted to because this means you won't feel awkward when they comfort you. =P It'd be a little odd for me if Rookie was female, considering how he hugs me all the time and calls me beautiful. ^^;
So, what do you all think? I chose to defend the one theory I think is most likely. Answers #2 and 3 are things I've heard in the past, and answer #4 is just something that occurred to me one day... There can be differences in behavior and temperament between two animals of opposite gender but the same species (e.g. lions). Maybe someone has a dæmon of the same sex merely because this animal reflects their soul better than the opposite gender would. Makes sense to me, but if this were true, why would the dæmon be the same gender from birth? *confusion* Anyway, I'd like to hear your opinions on this.
