Because I didn't know the way that the æ symbol was pronounced back when I read the books at first, I said the word as day-men, and it stuck. I know that it's actually dee-men, but that doesn't keep me from saying it wrong in my head. When I say the word aloud, though, it comes out in the right pronunciation most of the time. Why, I don't know... ^^;;

Actually, the 'ee' is a slight misrepresentation. There is a hint of the 'dayee' flavouring in there. But not that strong. The 'ee' is the prevailing sound therein...

FHS - are you all mad? How could it possibly be pronounced any other way than "demon" when it's the same word?
It's just a different spelling! Have you never heard of, or seen, the Encyclopædia Britannica? Whether it is an affectation to write it dæmon rather than demon is another matter, but to not know how it's pronounced - the mind boggles.

Propably because Nemesis doesn't seem to have any idea what kind of dæmons we're talking about. Sadly, s/he also ceased to read the posts he so kindly answered. Perception from his/her side could have spared us this useless attack, I fear. Nemesis, while the pronounciation of the word 'demon' and 'dæmon' might be the same in Pullman's works, we clearly ought to discuss semantics here. To keep it short: the kind of dæmon we refer to on here generally doesn't exhibit red eyes unless we're speaking of a certain form of albinism in animals. You might want to go and educate yourself here for most of us are rather attacked because of their loony beliefs than our undoubtely high IQs. Rest assured most members of this forum are able to think for themselves, even without - undoubtely well-intentioned - hints from strangers.

Well - I did read all the posts, and I've read books (apart from HDM) where dæmons/demons/daemons figure, and I have used Unix for many years. So I know that the word is used to mean a number of different things. But it is only ever correctly pronounced one way, and anyone who looks at "dæmon" or "daemon" and pronounces it differently to "demon" is doing so out of ignorance. I'm sorry - but that's the way it is. I wonder how many of the non "dee-mon" voters are not American? There's nothing wrong with not knowing how to pronounce a word spelled differently to how you are used to, but please don't pretend that because you choose to pronounce it incorrectly because it's not dæmon as in "leather-winged dæmon of the night" that somehow you are right.
