I recently bought a book of Edgar Allen Poe's poetry from a second hand book store and it wasn't until I got home that I realized that the introduction was written by Pullman. The first poem I read is called Ulalume, as in the into Pullman said it is his favorite...and something very, very interesting came up in it, which I immediatly recognized as a Poe's dæmon...of course it doesn't take much intelligence as Poe called directly her his soul in the poem...but here's whats interesting...she is a female, she is a separate physical entiny from him, she knew things he sould not yet see, and she had wings making her, symbolically, the animal counterpart of him, his soul, his dæmon...and her name was Psyche...
Which is of course, immensly interesting in itself, but, Ulalume being his favorite poem, it must have also been where pullman got the brilliant idea of dæmons...
Besides that the poem itself is brilliant, so I advise you all to read it, although if you heard what I already said about it you probably wouldn't need such advice seeing as you are dæmon-obsessed enough to be here in the first place...;D

That is interesting. Thats probably where he got the idea, but you know Socrates also believed in daemons. And Napoleon i believe.

Like herekittykitty said, I don't think Poe's Ulalume was the only key in Pullman realizing the concept of dæmons.. Socrates automatially comes to mind, but Pullman has never mentioned him. He has, however, talked about a certain painting* in interviews. He said something about how the ermine and lady looked as though they were interested in the same thing, or feeling similar emotions, as if they shared a mind.

That's interesting(the painting)...It's by Davinchi too, and he normally has all this hidden symbplism...I heard about Socrates too...he talked to his daemon often...cuz orginally the idea was from greek mythology or somthing, but it was more of a guardian spirit, than actually part of you...but I'm sure that also effected the idea, since daemon are named after it and I don"t think it was a coinicidence...

That painting by Da Vinci was one of several that Philip Pullman had printed in the programme for the National Theatres production of HDM. A little note next to them said that they were daemonsa from throughout history that Pullman realised had previously been unrecognised (or something like that). There were a few of them, varying from medieval woodcuts to oil paintings. Pretty cool huh?

That's cool about the Programme though...do you know if their is a copy somewhere on the internet or something? I'd like to see it...I hope their is lot's about dæmons in "The Book of Dust"...

Ha ha, but YOU live in Japan which is the country I want to go to most in the world!
I hope theres loads about daemons in the Book of Dust too. I don't know if you could get a programme online, maybe you could from the National Theatres website? I'll list the paintings featured in it anyway, so if any of you guys want to check them out you can. I can't scan them Im afraid, but here are the names:
Southampton in the tower, 1600 Young woman with a macaw by Tiepolo (1696-1770) William Hogarth self portrait with his dog Trump, 1745 Hans Holbein (1497-1543), Lady with a squirrel plus the Da Vinci painting.

I think Maia does live in England, in "good ole London town", apparently. As do wei. Silverania and I live in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, which is a cold, wet city, and is close to Scotland. What a terrible combination of facts!
