I was wondering... In "Oxford", the dæmons (who are, of course, corporeal) could have benefits. The one I thought of first was: If some humans had large dæmons like horses and elephants, could their humans ride them? Would this be "permitted" among all the unwritten dæmon laws? There's no way of knowing for sure, but I'd like opinions.

I dunno. It would be a bit ......weird to be riding your daemon. I mean, its your soul. But ,yeah, I agree that there would be benefits. In a crowd everyone would move out of your way pretty sharpish if you had a razor clawed tiger etc. walking besides you, taboo or not.

Well in this world, unfortunatley i think having corporeal daemons would be a disadvantage. People could easily take advantage of anyone. Just like Mme Coulter did with hers, and the guys in the lab...i mean you see such terrible stuff in this world, imagine how it would be like if all you had to do to persuade a person would be torturing not his mind or body but his daemon, directly his soul. (Kayrahn is outraged, feathers all fluffed up)
But having a visible one would present more advantages. Less confused people for one. And people wouldn't have to search endlessly for how they are or what job would suit them. Daemons would simplify life, no misunderstandings. And they couldn't be hurt, even if mean people could take advantage with the knowledge of what one's daemon is, they couldn't be hurt.
Ah...Humans...if only..but with "if"s pigs would fly...

Does anyone watch Dead Like Me? Its about this girl who is grim reaper, anyways this reminded me of one episode where she was doing paperwork, they were looking at what people thought just before they died, and the most thoughts were " im so alone" . i dont think there would be as many of those if dæmons were corporeal

Yes... those make sense. I was thinking along the lines of not usually taking advantage of your dæmon like that--for respect and such, but if you're running for your life... then it would be appropriate. *muses* I didn't think of along torture lines. *shudder* It would be awful.

well Swing they wouldn't be alone if their daemons were visible, they would still have companionship, even if they can't touch them. but i stand my ground when i say that corporeal daemons would be a disadvantage. Call me a pessimist maybe, but the world's like that...even if it would be wondefull to hug and hold Kayrahn...(he's still all fluffed up at the thought of torturing or seperating daemons)

Yeah, just thinking about that is horrible. I couldn't stand the thought of anyone hurting Mox just to get to me.

It was. We've just gone off on our own little tangent I think.Sorry Raven! I guess if Mox was corporeal I could hold him by the front paws and use his tail as a feather duster?... Other than that, Im happy with him the way hei is.

I would love Ky as a physical entity, to hold him and pet him, and watch him climb trees (small ones) and just roll in the grass and be happy. It's getting to where I can see that almost clearly anyway, but it'd be so wonderful to have him be corporeal(sp?). If all daemons were physical, that means that all the lonely people out there who commit suicide every day wouldn't have to, because they'd have their daemons' undying love. And maybe there'd be -less- cruel and nasty and bitter people out in the world. It's hard to see things that way, though, as control-crazy as all the world seems to be getting. It makes me glad Ky is safe in my heart, as much as I'd like for him to be physical. He's content with how things are..if he's happy, I am too, so long as that's concerned.

...Yeah lol, it was supposed to be the benefits. Oh well, the too-informed-pessimist in me couldn't help but speak out. ok i'll try hard to think about the positive side. As well as always having someone you love by your side, he/she can be helpfull...er..ooo! Idea! yeah in class, just make him tranform into a bald eagle so he can see what best of the class is writing! lol

I think a good advantage would be, in a dire (life or death) situation, your dæmon would help you. Example would be caught in the cold while it's raining, your dæmon could shield you and keep you warm, or also if you were confronted, it could fight. But then, again, it might get hurt.
And that's where things get bad. Shy people tend to have shy dæmons, and that wouldn't help in a fight, would it? I know my dæmon is agressive, he could kill and fight, but still..
I think there are way more disatvanged compared to advantages.

Yeah, I agree with Ra. Our world has developed in a different way to Lyra's. Her world developed and evolved in a way that incorporated daemons as a part of everyday life that were recognised by everyone, whereas our world has developed without that mass acceptance and recognition of daemons.
